Day 12 - Mungerannie, SA to Leigh Creek, SA

We heard the rats running around the tent all night! They were squealing and tapping their little feet all over the ground around our tent. The front section of the tent is not enclosed so any type of critter can run in and out there. We don't usually leave anything in the front section, but dad left his wallet on a chair there last night, which fell off onto the ground and the rats tried nibbling a corner of his wallet! They must not have found it very appetizing though because only one corner was nibbled! I am very glad I brought my things into the enclosed part of the tent with me!

We woke up early this morning. Around 5:30! We decided to cook bacon and eggs that we had all been hanging out for and they weren't very nice (quite disappointed actually haha!).... Dad is useless at cooking eggs! :-P

We left Mungerannie around 8:30 and started heading to Marree. The road was a bit muddy in sections from rainfall the night before. I was driving and in one particular area the mud was quite thick and sent me sliding sideways across the road! It was quite scary but fun. I managed to straighten the car out with my fantastic driving skills :-)

We drove a bit longer and came across Lake Harry, it was huge! It almost looked like an inland sea.

We noticed a Jump-up (flat top mountain/hill) with a track leading up to the top which looked interesting and decided to try it out.

We drove to the top of the Jump-Up which was relatively easy (although it was much steeper and rockier than it looks in the photo) and decided to have a quick cup of tea.

After our little break, we headed back to the main road and continued on to Marree.

We stopped at some ruins but couldn't find anything to scavenge :-P

We arrived at Marree. It is a nothing sort of town really, a local pub and a couple of shops, thats about it! We went to the local pub for a quick drink before deciding to continue on.

The Birdsville Bakery truck was there, filling up with supplies.

The motel in Marree didn't really look too appealing either!

We continued on and then stopped for lunch. We ate some mangled sausages on the side of a little dirt track.

Afterwards we drove to Fernia, an old historical town which is now just a pile of ruins.

We thought we might camp at Fernia, but the campground was packed! It was a very pretty little site, the campground was all mowed, it looked a bit like a golf course. It was a shame it was so busy.
We pushed on to Leigh Creek where we found a cabin at the caravan park for the night. James let me drive his car (a rarity)! So I had to have photo evidence of that!

Leigh Creek (on the outskirts of Flinders Ranges) is a funny little town. It is quite biggish for a small town. It is a mining town, similar to Weipa and looks a little bit like Canberra but on a tiny scale!
We are starting to head into the Flinders Ranges tomorrow which will be interesting.

Next stop Arkaroola in the Flinders Ranges!
