Day 9 - Windorah, QLD to Birdsville, QLD

We packed up everything relatively quickly and were ready to leave our camp site along the Cooper's Creek by about 8:30. We quickly stopped to take a couple of photos of the Coopers Creek sign.

We headed into Windorah again.

There was a old man sitting on the verandah of this house. All the houses looked run down like this.

We kept driving through the town and stopped at some old ruins to have a look. Mum did her favorite thing, scavenging for old bottles and pieces of metal hehe.

We went back to the main road and headed on to Birdsville. Along the way we past a gypsy wagon! It was being pulled by two camels with 4 more being lead behind. It was very cool. The man and lady live on the wagon and travel from town to town. It reminded me of something out of Mad Max or a post apocalyptic novel.

We came across a sand dune on the side of the road that had some tyre tracks going up it. James decided he wanted to try and drive it. I climbed to the top of the sand dune, it was hard work! Every time you take a step, you slide down a bit from the sand. But the view on the top was amazing!

James attempted to drive up but only got about halfway.

It was pretty windy driving along, it looked really stormy too but the rain held off. There were a lot of tumbleweeds tumbling across the road lol.

We saw a lot of wildlife on this road. Dad ran over a snake, James ran over a lizard and we even saw a dingo! We have never seen a dingo alive in the wild before, only dead ones, so that was pretty cool.

They have these different points of interest along the road you stop and look at. This particular one you're suppose to stand under the arrow and look at the mountain to see a hole through the hill. It really only looked like a tiny pin prick of light lol!

We stopped at a look-out on the way to Birdsville. It was packed with cars (there are more cars then what I show in the photo)! It's so weird seeing so much traffic in the middle of no where. We took some photos and then continued on.

We decided to stop for a food break in a little ghost town called Betoota. The only thing standing is an old abandon pub. It closed down in 1997 and the last inhabitant of the Betoota town (the publican) passed away in 2004 (he is buried behind the pub!). The pub was locked up but Dad found an open door so Mum, Dad and I had a look around the inside of the pub. It was pretty spooky. We needed torches because it was pitch black. The bar was still standing and there were empty champagne bottles still on display.

We had a cup of tea and lunch next to a creek in Betoota. There were lots of broken glass, it was like a dumping ground for the old bottles from the pub. We went scavenging and found a few relatively old bottles, Mum was quite pleased!
There was a farmer driving his cattle along the road from Betoota to the Birdsville road, so we had to drive through the cattle to get back on track.

The rest of the drive to Birdsville was long and tiring. But we finally made it! And went and took photos next to the Birdsville race course (where Dad was sick from food poisoning 15 years ago!)

We headed to the pub and it was packed! They even had Tom Williams, the presenter from the Great Outdoors travel show there filming a segment of the hotel for the new season of the show.

We seem to be following a Nissan patrol 4x4 club around everywhere. It's kind of cool seeing familiar faces at each pub we stop at.

We had a drink in the pub. Dad was particularly happy to finally have his beer at the pub! (instead of lemonade like last time because he was sick).

Dinner at the hotel was unbelievably busy!! We ordered dinner and had to wait 2 and a half hours to get it! And when we did, they had run out of half the food and replaced it with other things. We did get to see Elmo in the pub while we were waiting for dinner though!
We are staying one more night in Birdsville and tacking Big Red tomorrow!

  1. Love it :) keep posting.

The tumbleweed is so funny! And it's so random that there are so many camels!
