Day 8 - Innamincka, SA to Windorah, QLD

After a comfy night sleep, we left Innamincka around 10am and headed to Birdsville, the long way.

The drive was easy and uneventful really. We saw some wild camels though.

And we got stuck behind a road working truck which was spraying water all over the dirt road.

We went to the border of SA and QLD and stood in two states at once hehe. We had a cup of tea and some food.

Mum is standing weird because she is trying to stand in two states at once and eat her noodles hehe.

We drove to Haddon's Corner, which is the corner of SA and QLD. We had to drive over some little sand dunes to get there which was fun. They had a guest book there to sign, a guest book in the middle of no where! It had a lot of signatures, about 6 or so just for today already! And by the time we left, another two 4wds turned up. It is seriously so busy up here.

I tried standing on the post (which I probably wasn't allowed to do! And then I couldn't get down so I had to get Dad's help!

Also at Haddon's corner, we noticed James had a broken driving light. A stone from the dirt road must have hit it! It was nothing a little tape couldn't fix!

After our little pit stop we continued on our way. At the turn off to Birdsville, we decided to head in the opposite direction to Windorah to see if they had any cabins/places to stay instead of camping. Mum still has her cold and we were worried about her camping in the cold weather.

On the way to Windorah, we saw a lot of hawks (I am not sure what species they are!)

The scenery was also so beautiful! There were beautiful hills everywhere, and we drove on asphalt instead of dirt road for a change!

We finally arrived in Windorah and my gosh what a hick town it was! It was a bit scary looking actually, there were dilapidated houses everywhere. It was a derelict little town. And the accommodation that they had there was all booked out!
Anyway we got petrol at the local petrol station which looked like a shanty type shop. That old man that owned it was completely blind! He was a fixing a tyre when we got there, don't know how he was doing that! Dad and James filled up their cars and went to pay with their cards. The card machine he had there had nuts and bolts all stuck over the numbers so he knew what numbers he was pressing by feeling the different bolts. It was really cool and felt a bit like something out of a Mad Max movie! The man's wife was an interesting character too. She was a really rough type but very nice. She gave us a sticker each for the car that said 'I filled up at Merve's, Bub's and Little John's, Windorah' hehe.

After filling up with petrol, we kept driving until we reached a camp site next to Cooper's Creek. At the start it was spooky going off the road onto a tiny little dirt track right near the derelict town. But then it opened up and it was full of travelers with there tents and caravans. We found a spot between two different camps and set up our own tents.
It is not as cold tonight as the other nights. Hopefully it will stay warm!

Next stop Birdsville! (for real this time! :-) )
